Summary

Objective refraction measurements in children using the Plusoptix A09 photo-refractometer showed similar results to standard autorefractometry. However, the Plusoptix A09 did not detect higher refractive errors, highlighting the need for cycloplegic autorefractometry.

  • Accurate objective refraction measurement is crucial for diagnosing and managing refractive errors in children.
  • Standard autorefractometers and newer photo-refractometers are used for pediatric eye examinations.
  • Comparing measurement devices is essential to understand their diagnostic capabilities and limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare objective refraction measurements obtained from the Topcon KR-8900 autorefractometer and the Plusoptix A09 photo-refractometer in a pediatric population.
  • To evaluate the agreement between noncycloplegic measurements from both devices and cycloplegic measurements from the standard autorefractometer.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective transversal study involving 90 eyes of 45 pediatric patients (mean age 8.82 years).
  • Noncycloplegic measurements were taken with the Plusoptix A09 and Topcon KR-8900.
  • Cycloplegic and noncycloplegic measurements were obtained with the Topcon KR-8900.
  • Spherical equivalent, spherical and cylindrical values, and cylinder axis were compared using paired t-tests and Pearson's correlation.

Main Results:

  • Noncycloplegic Plusoptix A09 measurements showed slightly lower values compared to noncycloplegic autorefractometry.
  • Mean spherical power: Plusoptix A09 (1.11 D), noncycloplegic Topcon (1.12 D), cycloplegic Topcon (2.08 D).
  • Mean spherical equivalent: Plusoptix A09 (0.71 D), noncycloplegic Topcon (0.71 D), cycloplegic Topcon (1.68 D).
  • Prevalence of refractive errors: 32% hyperopia, 2.67% myopia, 65.33% astigmatism, 30% amblyopia.

Conclusions:

  • Noncycloplegic objective refraction values obtained with the Plusoptix A09 are comparable to those from standard autorefractometry.
  • The Plusoptix A09 is valuable for ophthalmological screening but may not detect significant refractive errors.
  • Cycloplegic autorefractometry remains essential for a comprehensive assessment of pediatric refractive errors.
