This study introduces a portable colorimetric detection system for smartphones that works in complex lighting. It uses a new calibration method and an optimal probe selection algorithm to improve accuracy and reduce probe numbers.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Smartphone-based colorimetric detection is a common point-of-care technique.
- Existing systems require light-tight boxes and complex calculations with numerous probes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a portable colorimetric detection system for smartphones.
- To overcome limitations of ambient light interference and probe number complexity.
Main Methods:
- A colorimetric detection system coupled with a novel color calibration method.
- Utilized a 3x4 colorimetric probe array and Support Vector Machine (SVM) discrimination.
- Implemented an optimal probe selection algorithm (OPSA) for probe reduction.
Main Results:
- High accuracy achieved under complex ambient light conditions.
- OPSA significantly simplified the probe array while maintaining classification performance.
- The system eliminated the need for light-tight boxes.
Conclusions:
- The developed system enhances the portability of smartphone-based colorimetric detection.
- The novel calibration and OPSA address key limitations of current methods.
- This approach offers a more practical solution for point-of-care diagnostics.

Ostomy Care
An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening from the intestines to the outside of the body, allowing for the rerouting of effluent. This opening is known as a stoma. A stoma usually protrudes above the skin surface, appearing pink or red, moist, and round, and it lacks nerve sensations.
There are different types of ostomies, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies:
