    Summary

One-piece molded plastic spinal orthoses benefit patients with scoliosis and low back pain. However, patients with kyphosis or vertebral disease may not benefit due to skin pressure intolerance.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedics
    • Biomedical Engineering

    Background:

    • Spinal orthoses are crucial for managing various musculoskeletal conditions.
    • One-piece molded plastic spinal orthoses offer a specific treatment modality.
    • Understanding prescription criteria is essential for optimal patient outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To establish prescription guidelines for one-piece molded plastic spinal orthoses.
    • To identify patient populations that benefit most from these orthoses.
    • To determine limitations of this orthotic approach.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of fifty patients with diverse clinical conditions.
    • Analysis of treatment outcomes following the application of one-piece molded plastic spinal orthoses.
    • Evaluation of patient tolerance and response to corrective and distractive forces.

    Main Results:

    • Patients with idiopathic and paralytic scoliosis, kyphoscoliosis, and selected low back pain cases showed significant benefit.
    • Patients with kyphosis and localized vertebral body disease generally did not benefit.
    • Intolerance to excessive skin pressure was a key factor limiting benefit in certain conditions.

    Conclusions:

    • One-piece molded plastic spinal orthoses are effective for scoliosis and certain low back pain conditions.
    • Prescription should carefully consider the potential for skin pressure-related complications.
    • These orthoses are less suitable for kyphosis and localized vertebral disease due to tolerance issues.
