Hearing

57.5K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Analysis of Population Pharmacokinetic Data01:12

Analysis of Population Pharmacokinetic Data

815
Analysis of population pharmacokinetic data involves studying the behavior of drugs within diverse populations to understand their pharmacokinetic parameters. Traditional pharmacokinetic methods typically involve collecting samples from a few individuals and estimating these parameters. While these methods are commonly used, they have limitations in capturing the variability in drug response among individuals or heterogeneous populations. Population pharmacokinetics is employed to address these...

Line Loss01:10

Line Loss

548
The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss.
Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

What is Population Genetics?01:25

What is Population Genetics?

65.0K
A population is composed of members of the same species that simultaneously live and interact in the same area. When individuals in a population breed, they pass down their genes to their offspring. Many of these genes are polymorphic, meaning that they occur in multiple variants. Such variations of a gene are referred to as alleles. The collective set of all the alleles within a population is known as the gene pool.

Current Trends in Nursing II

3.6K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a common otolaryngologic emergency.
  • Limited data exists on the epidemiological trends of SSNHL in South Korea.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and clinical characteristics of unilateral SSNHL in South Korea.
  • To analyze trends in SSNHL based on patient demographics and diagnosis month.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized national Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data from 2011 to 2015.
  • Investigated monthly incidence, age, sex, and seasonal distribution of SSNHL cases.

Main Results:

  • Mean annual incidence of unilateral SSNHL was 17.76 cases per 100,000 population.
  • Incidence increased with age, peaking in the 60s, with a slight female predominance (1:1.35 M:F ratio).
  • Highest diagnosis rates occurred in October, with the lowest in January.

Conclusions:

  • Unilateral SSNHL incidence is increasing in South Korea.
  • The elderly, women, and individuals diagnosed in autumn exhibit higher incidence rates.
  • Findings suggest a potential link between SSNHL and colder weather patterns.
