The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison02:57

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

56.2K
According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

Reflection of Waves01:07

Reflection of Waves

4.7K
When a wave travels from one medium to another, it gets reflected at the boundary of the second medium. A common example of this is when a person yells at a distance from a cliff and hears the echo of their voice. The sound waves (longitudinal waves) traveling in the air are reflected from the bounding cliff. Similarly, flipping one end of a string whose other end is tied to a wall causes a pulse (transverse wave) to travel through the string, which gets reflected upon reaching the wall. In...

Critical Region, Critical Values and Significance Level01:16

Critical Region, Critical Values and Significance Level

13.4K
The critical region, critical value, and significance level are interdependent concepts crucial in hypothesis testing.
In hypothesis testing, a sample statistic is converted to a test statistic using z, t, or chi-square distribution. A critical region is an area under the curve in  probability distributions demarcated by the critical value. When the test statistic falls in this region, it suggests that the null hypothesis must be rejected. As this region contains all those values of the...

Critical Values01:31

Critical Values

10.4K
A critical value is a definite value obtained from a particular probability distribution at a predecided confidence level (or a predecided significance level) for a given population parameter. The critical value provides demarcation that separates the sample statistics that are likely to occur from the ones that are unlikely to occur based on the given probability distribution and the population parameter to be estimated. The critical value for normal distribution is obtained from the z...

Critical Thinking01:19

Critical Thinking

1.2K
Critical thinking involves reflective and productive thinking and the evaluation of evidence. Critical thinkers seek to understand the deeper meaning of ideas, question assumptions, and make independent decisions about what to believe or do. Scientists, for instance, are often critical thinkers. Critical thinking also requires humility about what we know and don't know and the motivation to look beyond the obvious. It is essential for effective problem-solving.
Colleges and universities are...

Critical Thinking I

5.3K
Critical thinking helps decision-making and allows nurses to recognize barriers to success and find solutions to possible issues. It helps to brainstorm and implement ideas to achieve goals. Critical thinking helps acknowledge and state workflow inefficiencies while improving management techniques. Nurses understand the value of critical thinking and look for fellow nurses with critical thinking skills to upgrade their professional standards. Critical thinking can advance a nurse's career...

Summary

A six-month critical reflection program significantly improved critical thinking and communication skills in novice nurses. While job performance improved in both groups, the program specifically enhanced key clinical competencies for faster adaptation.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Healthcare Professional Development
  • Clinical Skills Training

Background:

  • Critical reflection is recognized for enhancing student communication and confidence.
  • Novice nurses require effective strategies for rapid adaptation to clinical environments.
  • Assessing work-based programs is crucial for improving nursing practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a work-based critical reflection program's effectiveness.
  • To enhance novice nurses' clinical critical-thinking abilities.
  • To improve novice nurses' communication competency and job performance.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental design was employed with 44 novice nurses.
  • The experimental group underwent a six-month critical reflection program.
  • Clinical critical-thinking skills, communication abilities, and job performance were measured.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in clinical critical-thinking skills (p=0.003).
  • Communication abilities showed a statistically significant difference between groups (p=0.028).
  • Job performance improved in both groups, with no significant difference observed.

Conclusions:

  • A critical reflection program is essential for enhancing novice nurses' critical thinking and communication.
  • The program aids in faster adaptation to the clinical setting.
  • Further research with larger, diverse samples is recommended.
