A pilot training event for pre-registration pharmacist tutors significantly boosted confidence and practice changes. However, protected time for reflective practice is needed to fully enhance tutor support and standardize training nationally.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacy education and training
- Professional development for healthcare educators
Background:
- Concerns exist regarding the quality and consistency of pre-registration pharmacist training.
- A pilot training event was developed by Health Education England North East (HEENE) in 2016 for pre-registration tutors.
- The event aimed to equip new tutors for their role and address training quality issues.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of a pilot training event for pre-registration pharmacist tutors.
- To assess the impact of the training on tutors' confidence and perceived competence.
- To identify areas for improvement in tutor training and support.
Main Methods:
- Quantitative data collected via pre- and post-training questionnaires.
- Questionnaires assessed tutor competence in domains like feedback and reflective practice.
- Qualitative data gathered through interviews with a subset of participants.
Main Results:
- Participants reported increased confidence and positive practice changes post-training.
- No significant improvement was observed in the 'undertaking of reflective practice' domain.
- Lack of protected workplace time for reflective practice was identified as a barrier.
Conclusions:
- The tutor training event was perceived as valuable and effective in meeting its objectives.
- The training has the potential to improve the standardization of pharmacist pre-registration tutor training.
- Addressing external factors, such as allocated time for reflective practice, is crucial for enhancing tutor support.

pre-mRNA Processing
Once about 20-40 ribonucleotides have been joined together by RNA polymerase, a group of enzymes adds a “cap” to the 5’ end of the growing transcript. In this process, a 5’ phosphate is replaced by modified guanosine that has a methyl group attached to it (7-Methyl...
