Background:

  • Physically active lessons integrate movement into academic content to increase children's physical activity.
  • Virtual Traveller was a six-week, 10-minute physically active lesson intervention using Virtual Field Trips, delivered three times weekly to Year 4 pupils (aged 8-9) in Greater London, UK.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the process evaluation of the Virtual Traveller randomized controlled trial.
  • Evaluation followed the RE-AIM framework criteria: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods evaluation was conducted with five intervention classes.
  • Data were collected from consent logs, teacher session logs, teacher and pupil questionnaires, teacher interviews, and pupil focus groups.

Main Results:

  • High participation and low attrition (Reach) with positive pupil and teacher evaluations (Effectiveness).
  • Participants represented more deprived and ethnic backgrounds; the intervention has potential to be free (Adoption).
  • 70% of sessions were delivered (Implementation), but no long-term maintenance was observed (Maintenance).

Conclusions:

  • The Virtual Traveller intervention shows potential as a low-cost, physically active lesson program for UK primary schools.
  • Further research is needed to address the maintenance aspect of the intervention.
