A new mobile interface concept for medication management was developed using a human-centered design process. This electronic alternative to paper medication plans achieved a high usability score, improving patient safety.
Area of Science:
- Health Informatics
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Patient Safety
Background:
- Germany's nationwide medication plan is paper-based, leading to safety concerns.
- An electronic alternative could address the limitations of the current paper system.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a mobile interface concept for managing medication information.
- To explore the potential of digital solutions for medication management.
Main Methods:
- Human-centered design (UCD) process was employed.
- Analysis of use context, persona development, and interaction concept design.
- Paper and medium-fidelity prototypes were developed and evaluated by experts and end-users using think-aloud tests and the System Usability Scale (SUS).
Main Results:
- An interface design concept was developed for a specific user persona.
- The concept achieved an average SUS score of 92.1 in user testing.
- Identified usability issues were resolved, finalizing the design for future implementation.
Conclusions:
- The developed mobile interface concept shows high usability for medication management.
- The UCD approach provides a transferable framework for developing similar health applications.
- This digital solution has the potential to enhance patient safety by improving medication management.
