Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies02:09

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies

42.5K
When we hold a stereotype about a person, we have expectations that he or she will fulfill that stereotype. A self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation held by a person that alters his or her behavior in a way that tends to make it true. When we hold stereotypes about a person, we tend to treat the person according to our expectations. This treatment can influence the person to act according to our stereotypic expectations, thus confirming our stereotypic beliefs. Research by Rosenthal and...

Stereotype Content Model

15.5K
The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) was first proposed by Susan Fiske and her colleagues (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; see also Fiske, 2012 and Fiske, 2017). The SCM specifies that when someone encounters a new group, they will stereotype them based on two metrics: warmth—or that group’s perceived intent, and how likely they are to provide help or inflict harm—and competence—or their ability to carry out that objective. Depending on the warmth-competence...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

95.5K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Deductive Reasoning01:16

Deductive Reasoning

69.4K
Deductive reasoning, or deduction, is the type of logic used in hypothesis-based science. In deductive reasoning, the pattern of thinking moves in the opposite direction as compared to inductive reasoning, which means that it uses a general principle or law to predict specific results. From those general principles, a scientist can deduce and predict the specific results that would be valid as long as the general principles are valid.
For example, a researcher can deduce specific predictions...

Schemas01:42

Schemas

12.4K
A schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Summary

Bisexual stereotypes about promiscuity and confusion may not be learned but deduced from societal assumptions. Lack of knowledge about these stereotypes can paradoxically increase their adoption among heterosexual individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Social Psychology
  • Sexuality Studies
  • Stereotype Research

Background:

  • Bisexuals represent an often invisible sexual minority.
  • Despite invisibility, bisexuals face stereotypes of confusion and promiscuity.
  • Existing theories on stereotype acquisition contrast with recent hypotheses suggesting deduction from common sexual conceptualizations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between knowledge of bisexual stereotypes and their stereotypical evaluation.
  • To test competing theories of stereotype acquisition: learning versus deduction.
  • To understand how lack of knowledge influences the adoption of bisexual stereotypes.

Main Methods:

  • 261 heterosexual participants evaluated characters based on provided descriptions.

  • Participants' explicit knowledge of bisexual stereotypes was assessed.
  • Evaluations of bisexual women were compared to non-bisexual women.
  • Main Results:

    • Bisexual women were perceived as more confused and promiscuous than non-bisexual women.
    • Stereotypical evaluations of bisexual women showed an inverse relationship with knowledge of these stereotypes.
    • Findings suggest stereotypes are deduced rather than learned.

    Conclusions:

    • Bisexual stereotypes appear to be deduced from shared assumptions about sexuality, not directly learned.
    • Public invisibility of bisexuals may contribute to the uninhibited adoption of these stereotypes.
    • Lack of awareness regarding bisexual stereotypes can exacerbate their prevalence.
