This study found no direct link between allergic diseases like asthma or rhinitis and suicidal ideation (SI) in adults. However, depression was strongly associated with SI across all groups, including those with allergies and healthy individuals.
Area of Science:
- Medical Research
- Psychiatry
- Immunology
Background:
- Suicidal ideation (SI) is a significant public health concern.
- Allergic diseases are prevalent and may impact mental health.
- Understanding potential links between physical and mental health conditions is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if allergic diseases, specifically allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis, are associated with suicidal ideation in adults.
- To explore the relationship between allergic conditions and mental health outcomes.
Main Methods:
- A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted with adults aged 20-50.
- Participants included patients with allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and healthy controls.
- Suicidal ideation was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II).
Main Results:
- No statistically significant association was found between allergic asthma or allergic rhinitis and suicidal ideation when compared to controls.
- The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 14.8% in allergic asthma, 11.7% in allergic rhinitis, and 8.3% in controls.
- Depression was significantly associated with suicidal ideation in all groups (allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and controls).
Conclusions:
- The study did not find a direct association between allergic diseases and suicidal ideation.
- Depression emerged as a strong predictor of suicidal ideation, irrespective of allergic disease status.
- Further research may be needed to understand the complex interplay between allergic conditions and mental well-being.
