Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.1K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

When analyzing a beam subjected to various loads, it is crucial to understand the internal forces and moments generated within the structure. These internal forces can be broadly classified into normal forces, shear forces, and bending moments. To determine these forces and moments, we use the method of sections and apply a specific sign convention based on their direction and the side of the section being analyzed.
The normal force acts perpendicular to the beam's cross-section and can...

Alternative RNA Splicing02:18

Alternative RNA Splicing

25.3K
Alternative RNA splicing is the regulated splicing of exons and introns to produce different mature mRNAs from a single pre-mRNA. Unlike in constitutive splicing where a single gene produces a single type of mRNA, alternative splicing allows an organism to produce multiple proteins from a single gene and plays an important role in protein diversity.
There are five types of alternative RNA splicing that vary in the ways the pre-mRNA segments are removed or retained in the mature mRNA. The first...

Enolate Mechanism Conventions01:15

Enolate Mechanism Conventions

2.9K
When a carbonyl compound is treated with a strong base, the α position gets deprotonated to give a resonance-stabilized intermediate called an enolate. Enolates are ambident nucleophiles because they possess two nucleophilic sites that can attack an electrophile owing to the delocalization of the negative charge between the α carbon and oxygen atoms. When the oxygen atom attacks an electrophile, it is called O-attack, whereas electrophilic attack via the α carbon is known as...

Null and Alternative Hypotheses01:16

Null and Alternative Hypotheses

12.8K
The actual hypothesis testing begins by considering two hypotheses. They are termed  the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis. These hypotheses contain opposing viewpoints.
The null hypothesis, denoted by H0 is a statement of no difference between the variables—they are not related. This can often be considered the status quo. As  a result if you cannot accept the null, it requires some action.
The alternative hypothesis, denoted by H1 or Ha, is a claim about the...

Summary

ER:Yag laser conditioning significantly reduces the bond strength of aesthetic orthodontic brackets like sapphire and ceramic. However, it showed no significant difference for microfilled copolymer and glass fiber brackets, offering a potential alternative for these materials.

Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Laser Dentistry

Background:

  • Conventional acid-etching is standard for enamel conditioning before bracket bonding.
  • ER:Yag lasers offer a potentially conservative alternative for enamel conditioning.
  • Aesthetic orthodontic brackets are increasingly used in clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of ER:Yag laser enamel conditioning for bonding various aesthetic orthodontic brackets.
  • To compare shear bond strength (SBS) and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) scores between laser and acid-etching techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Five types of aesthetic brackets (microfilled copolymer, glass fiber, sapphire, polyoxymethylene, sintered ceramic) were tested.
  • Two hundred bovine incisors were conditioned using either acid-etching or ER:Yag laser.
  • Brackets were bonded, and shear bond strength was measured using a Universal Testing Machine.

Main Results:

  • Acid-etching yielded higher SBS for sapphire, polyoxymethylene, and sintered ceramic brackets.
  • ER:Yag laser conditioning significantly decreased SBS for sapphire, polyoxymethylene, and sintered ceramic brackets.
  • No significant SBS reduction was observed for microfilled copolymer and glass fiber brackets with laser conditioning.

Conclusions:

  • ER:Yag laser conditioning can compromise the bond strength of certain aesthetic orthodontic brackets, particularly sapphire, polyoxymethylene, and sintered ceramic types.
  • Laser conditioning may be a viable alternative for microfilled copolymer and glass fiber brackets due to maintained bond strength.
  • Further research is needed to optimize laser parameters for effective bonding of all aesthetic bracket types.
