Background:

  • Cystic tumors necessitate differentiation from gliomas, metastatic tumors, and hemangioblastomas.
  • Meningiomas are common intracranial tumors, and some present with cysts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the characteristics of cyst-associated meningiomas.
  • To determine associations between cyst types, histopathological subtypes, and tumor grade in meningiomas.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 38 cyst-associated meningioma cases.
  • Analysis of preoperative radiologic studies and histologic confirmation.
  • Data collected from November 1998 to July 2017.

Main Results:

  • Out of 395 meningiomas, 38 (9.6%) were cyst-associated.
  • Nauta type I cysts were most frequent (39.5%).
  • Meningothelial type was the most common histopathological subtype (36.8%).

Conclusions:

  • No statistically significant association was found between meningioma histopathological type and associated cysts.
  • A weak correlation suggests a higher rate of World Health Organization grade II tumors in cyst-associated meningiomas compared to unrelated ones.
