Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) values in healthy preterm newborns.
  • To establish reference ranges for 17-OHP until corrected gestational age is reached.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study involving 36 preterm infants.
  • 17-OHP levels measured via ELISA from heel blood.
  • Serial measurements from early postnatal life up to corrected gestational age, compared to 82 full-term infants.

Main Results:

  • Preterm infants (<34 weeks gestational age) exhibit significantly higher 17-OHP values than full-term neonates in the first week.
  • 17-OHP levels decrease but remain elevated compared to full-term infants, even at corrected gestational age (average difference 63.0%).

  • Current 17-OHP reference ranges may not be suitable for preterm populations.
  • A second screening at 37 weeks corrected age is proposed for improved interpretation.
