Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe and analyze the characteristics of ocular trauma cases presenting to a tertiary ophthalmology emergency department in Colombia.
  • To identify key demographics, injury types, and circumstances surrounding ocular trauma.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted.
  • Included patients consulting or referred for eye injuries between March 2022 and January 2023.
  • Data collected on demographics, injury details, and classification using Birmingham Eye Trauma Terminology System (BETT) and Ocular Trauma Score (OTS).

  • 2,088 eyes from 1,957 patients were analyzed; 78.5% were male, median age 36.
  • Mechanical or mixed trauma accounted for 88.4% of injuries, often occurring during work/education without eye protection (45.9%).
  • Most injuries were closed globe (91.1%), with 2.8% unclassifiable initially by BETT, and 85.8% falling into OTS category 5.

Conclusions:

  • Ocular trauma predominantly affects men, consistent with global trends.
  • There's a need to enhance the referral system from lower-level care institutions and improve awareness of eye protection.
  • A proposed "still to be determined" BETT category could improve initial classification accuracy and subsequent OTS calculations.
