Adolescent sun exposure may reduce multiple sclerosis (MS) risk, while drug abuse and alcohol intake increase it. Public health initiatives should promote sun safety and discourage substance use to lower MS rates.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Epidemiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) risk is linked to low sun exposure, vitamin D, and smoking.
- Limited evidence exists on other lifestyle factors' impact on MS.
- This study investigates sun exposure, physical activity, drug abuse, and alcohol intake in relation to MS.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the association between lifestyle factors (sun exposure, physical activity, drug abuse, alcohol intake) and the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS).
Main Methods:
- Population-based incident case-control study conducted in Iran.
- Included 547 incident MS cases and 1057 general population controls.
- Data analyzed using logistic regression.
Main Results:
- Higher adolescent sun exposure correlated with reduced MS risk (summer and winter).
- Physical activity showed no significant association with MS risk.
- Lifetime drug abuse (OR 2.93) and alcohol intake (OR 1.49) were significantly associated with increased MS risk, showing a dose-response relationship for drug abuse.
Conclusions:
- Sun exposure in adolescence, drug abuse, and alcohol use are associated with MS in a Middle Eastern population.
- Educational programs promoting sun exposure and reducing substance abuse could lower MS incidence.
- Findings highlight modifiable lifestyle factors for MS prevention strategies.
