Summary

Platelet aggregation marker beta-thromboglobulin (BTG) is elevated in acute atherosclerotic and cardioembolic infarcts, persisting for weeks. Elevated BTG levels correlate with infarct size and predict mortality in atherothrombosis.

Area of Science:

  • Biochemistry
  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Platelet activation is implicated in thrombotic events.
  • Biomarkers reflecting platelet aggregation are crucial for understanding stroke pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma beta-thromboglobulin (BTG) levels in different types of stroke.
  • To determine the correlation of BTG with infarct characteristics and patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Measurement of plasma BTG in patients with atherosclerotic thrombotic infarcts, cardioembolic infarcts, and lacunes.
  • Comparison with control groups.
  • Correlation analysis with infarct size (CT) and 6-week mortality.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Significantly elevated BTG in acute atherosclerotic (p < 0.0001) and cardioembolic (p < 0.005) infarcts compared to controls.
  • Normal BTG levels in lacunes.
  • BTG elevation persisted for 6 weeks post-event.
  • Acute BTG levels tended to correlate with infarct size and predict 6-week mortality in atherosclerotic thrombotic infarcts.

Conclusions:

  • Platelet aggregation plays a key role in atherothrombosis.
  • Plasma BTG is a potential biomarker for acute thrombotic stroke severity and prognosis.
