A rare clinical syndrome links eruptive seborrheic keratoses to colon cancer. Successful removal of colon tumors led to the regression of these skin lesions, suggesting an immune response.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology and Oncology
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Eruptive seborrheic keratoses (ESK) can be associated with internal malignancies.
  • The specific association between ESK and adenomatous colonic polyps or adenocarcinomas requires further elucidation.

Observation:

  • Five patients presented with a clinical syndrome of ESK and colonic adenomatous polyps and/or adenocarcinomas.
  • Cutaneous lesions showed partial to complete regression following surgical removal of the internal malignant tumors.

Findings:

  • Regression of ESK correlated with the treatment of underlying colon cancer.
  • Histopathological examination of resolving lesions revealed enhanced chronic inflammatory infiltrate.

Implications:

  • The regression of ESK after malignancy removal suggests a potential link to the host's immune response.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This association may serve as a clinical indicator for gastrointestinal malignancies.
  • Further research into the immunologic mechanisms underlying ESK regression is warranted.
