Summary

Lower limb function tests, like the Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) and one-leg-standing (OLS) tests, can effectively screen for cognitive decline in older adults. These simple tests reveal significant correlations with cognitive impairment.

Background:

Cognitive impairment is often associated with reduced lower limb function in elderly individuals.
Early identification of cognitive decline is crucial for timely intervention and management.
The potential for using physical function tests as a screening tool for cognitive disorders requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the relationship between lower limb function and cognitive disorders in 66-year-olds.
To determine if lower limb function tests can serve as a screening method for cognitive decline.
To establish optimal cut-off points for these tests in identifying cognitive impairment.

Main Methods:

Utilized data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort for individuals aged 66 undergoing health screening (2010-2014).
Assessed cognitive function using a questionnaire.
Evaluated lower limb function through the Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) test and the one-leg-standing (OLS) test.

Main Results:

A significant correlation was found between cognitive function and TUG interval (r = 0.414, p < 0.001).
Cognitive function also showed a significant correlation with OLS duration (r = -0.237, p < 0.001).
Optimal cut-off points for screening cognitive disorders were identified as TUG >11 seconds and OLS ≤12 seconds.

Conclusions:

Lower limb function is significantly correlated with cognitive function in 66-year-old adults.
The TUG and OLS tests are valuable and practical screening tools for detecting cognitive disorders in the elderly population.
Further large-scale prospective studies are recommended to explore the causal relationship between cognitive and lower limb function.
