Background:

  • Rhinoplasty is a common cosmetic and functional surgery involving osteotomies.
  • Vibrations from osteotome percussion may affect the auditory and vestibular systems.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of rhinoplasty, specifically osteotomies performed with a hammer, on the audiovestibular system.

Main Methods:

  • 30 rhinoplasty patients (study) and 10 control patients (nasal surgery without osteotomies) were assessed.
  • Audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials, and video head impulse tests (vHIT) were used pre- and post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in auditory function (pure tone thresholds, otoacoustic emissions) were found between groups.
  • No statistically significant differences in vestibular function (vestibular-evoked myogenic potential, vHIT) were observed between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Rhinoplasty utilizing osteotomies with a hammer appears to be safe for audiovestibular functions.
  • The procedure does not significantly impact hearing or balance.
