Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Genetics
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Down syndrome is associated with an increased risk of autoimmune disorders.
  • Thyroid dysfunction is a common comorbidity in individuals with Down syndrome.
  • Screening for thyroid dysfunction is crucial in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in adults with Down syndrome.
  • To assess the incidence of hypothyroidism and thyroid antibodies in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A screening study was conducted on 55 adult Down syndrome subjects.
  • Clinical features suggestive of hypothyroidism were assessed.
  • Thyroid function tests and antibody testing were performed.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 50% of subjects exhibited clinical signs of hypothyroidism.
  • Twenty-two percent of the total subjects were diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
  • Sixteen percent of subjects had positive thyroid antibodies.

Conclusions:

  • Adults with Down syndrome have a high prevalence of thyroid dysfunction.
  • Routine screening for thyroid disorders is recommended for individuals with Down syndrome.
  • The presence of thyroid antibodies indicates an autoimmune component.
