1University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN.
A core set of 21 teaching competencies across five domains has been identified for community physician preceptors. This standardized list will guide the formal training and evaluation of these essential medical educators.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Faculty Development
Background:
- Community physicians deliver 25% of medical student outpatient training.
- Currently, there's a lack of formal training and agreed-upon teaching competencies for preceptors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify core teaching competencies for community physician preceptors.
- To establish a basis for training and evaluation of preceptors.
Main Methods:
- A modified Delphi process involving key stakeholders was employed.
- Competencies were developed by medical educators and refined through multi-round surveys.
- Stakeholders included non-physician educators, academic physicians, community physicians, residents, and medical students.
Main Results:
- An initial list of 24 competencies was evaluated and refined.
- Four additional competencies were added, resulting in a final list of 21.
- Competencies were organized into five distinct domains.
Conclusions:
- A finalized list of 21 teaching competencies in five domains is now available.
- This framework can guide the training and evaluation of community physician preceptors.
