Background:

Syphilis is a significant sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Canada, ranking third in reported cases.
National syphilis rates have shown a consistent and rapid increase since 2001.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze and summarize the epidemiological trends of syphilis rates in Canada from 2010 to 2015.
To provide updated data on infectious and congenital syphilis incidence across different demographics and regions.

Main Methods:

Utilized laboratory-confirmed case data reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Calculated national and regional rates of infectious syphilis and early congenital syphilis.
Analyzed rates stratified by sex, age group, and geographic location.

Main Results:

Infectious syphilis rates rose by 85.6% from 2010 to 2015 (5.0 to 9.3 per 100,000 population).
The majority of cases in 2015 were in males (93.7%), with rates significantly higher than in females.
Congenital syphilis rates decreased initially but saw an increase in 2015.

Conclusions:

Syphilis incidence continues to escalate in Canada, with a pronounced rise among young males.
Observed trends align with those in the United States and European Union.
Sexual behavior among men who have sex with men (MSM) is considered a primary driver of syphilis transmission.
