Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy can significantly improve erectile dysfunction (ED) in men with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Treatment benefits for ED correlate with CPAP usage and improved quality of life.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Sleep Medicine
- Cardiology
Background:
- Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common comorbidity in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
- The therapeutic impact of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on erectile function in OSA patients remains underexplored.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the efficacy of CPAP therapy in improving erectile function in men with severe OSA.
- To assess the correlation between CPAP use, quality of life, and erectile function improvement.
Main Methods:
- Prospective evaluation of 94 men with severe OSA (apnea-hypopnea-index ≥ 30/h).
- Assessment of erectile function using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) before and after 6-12 months of CPAP therapy.
- Standard questionnaires evaluated daytime sleepiness, quality of life, and depression.
Main Results:
- 68.1% of patients presented with ED (IIEF-5 score ≤ 21).
- CPAP treatment significantly improved erectile function in patients with moderate to severe ED.
- A trend indicated a correlation between improved erectile function and CPAP usage duration, alongside enhanced quality of life.
Conclusions:
- ED is highly prevalent in severe OSA and can be partially reversed by long-term CPAP therapy.
- The positive effects of CPAP on erectile function may be linked to patient compliance and are associated with improved quality of life.
- Further randomized controlled trials are warranted to validate these findings.
