    Summary

Delayed surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is safe in select cases. This study found no visual loss or complications in 16 patients who did not undergo immediate repair.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Retinal Surgery

    Background:

    • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) often requires prompt surgical intervention.
    • Factors may preclude immediate surgery in some RRD cases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of delayed surgical repair in patients with RRD.
    • To identify characteristics of RRD cases where immediate surgery is not performed.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective case series of 16 patients with RRD.
    • Analysis of clinical characteristics and follow-up data for patients with delayed or no surgery.

    Main Results:

    • Half of the cases did not undergo surgery.
    • Four cases were followed for over 6 years.
    • No visual loss, chronic inflammation, glaucoma, or rubeosis occurred due to surgical delay.

    Conclusions:

    • Delayed surgical intervention is a viable option for select RRD patients.
    • Careful patient selection can mitigate risks associated with delayed RRD repair.
