1Fall Stop . . . MOVE STRONG, New York, NY, USA.
This study found that a community-based joyful movement program improved older adults' functional balance and confidence. The program is acceptable and beneficial for fall prevention in older populations.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Public Health
- Kinesiology
Background:
- Existing fall-prevention programs often lack engagement for older adults in community settings.
- There is a need for innovative programs that promote active participation and well-being in older populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate a community-based group program integrating joyful movement for fall prevention in older adults.
- To assess improvements in functional balance and confidence through a positive movement experience.
Main Methods:
- A one-group pre-post test study design was employed for program evaluation.
- Functional balance and confidence were measured using standardized tests.
- Qualitative feedback was collected from participants at the end of the program.
Main Results:
- Significant improvements were observed in functional balance (Functional Reach Test, d = .60) and fall efficacy (Modified Falls Efficacy Scale, d = .17).
- Most participants reported increased optimism and/or confidence (70%) and better walking ability (50%).
- The program demonstrated acceptability among older adult participants.
Conclusions:
- A joyful movement curriculum is a viable and acceptable approach for older adults.
- The program leads to measurable improvements in functional balance and confidence, contributing to fall prevention.
- Further research is recommended to explore long-term reductions in fall risk and broader health benefits.
