Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) significantly improves quality of life and leads to small but meaningful increases in patient activity levels. Most patients can maintain their desired activities after surgery without worsening symptoms.

  • Utilized the Shoulder Activity Level (SAL), Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder Index (WOOS), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE), and Simple Shoulder Test (SST).
  • Included patients undergoing primary anatomic or reverse TSA, with a minimum follow-up of 2 years.
  • Main Results:

    • Both anatomic and reverse TSA showed statistically significant improvements in WOOS, ASES, SST, and SANE scores.
    • Individually, SAL scores showed non-significant improvements for both anatomic (P=.07) and reverse TSA (P=.38).

    • TSA leads to statistically significant improvements in overall patient activity levels when both anatomic and reverse procedures are considered together.
    • Patients undergoing TSA can generally maintain their activity levels post-operatively without exacerbating symptoms.
