Abstract:
The classic view of endocrinology as the study of a group of glands containing specialized endocrine cells, releasing substances that act at a distance, has been seriously questioned in recent years. The main reason for this was the discovery that endocrine cells are diffusely distributed through most body tissues and intermingled between nonendocrine elements.
