    Summary

Treatment for testicular germ cell tumors has significantly improved, with cis-platinum chemotherapy leading to high survival rates for both seminomas and non-seminomas. Long-term survival is now expected in most patients with adequate management.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Urology

    Background:

    • Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) are the most common solid malignancy in young men.
    • Advances in treatment have dramatically improved patient outcomes over recent decades.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review the progress in the management of testicular germ cell tumors.
    • To discuss current treatment modalities and their efficacy.

    Main Methods:

    • Literature review of the management of testicular germ cell tumors.
    • Discussion of disease natural history, symptomatology, diagnostics, staging, and treatment options.

    Main Results:

    • Significant improvement in treatment results for non-seminomas, particularly with cis-platinum based chemotherapy.
    • High long-term survival rates: 85% for non-seminomas and 95% for seminomas with adequate treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • Modern management strategies, especially cis-platinum chemotherapy, have led to excellent prognoses for TGCT patients.
    • Effective treatment requires a comprehensive approach including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
