Background:

  • In March 2016, elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) exceeding 40 µg/dL were identified in three shipyard workers.
  • This prompted an investigation into the scope and contributing factors of lead exposure within the shipyard environment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of elevated BLLs among shipyard workers.
  • To identify risk factors associated with occupational lead exposure in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A case was defined as a blood lead level (BLL) of ≥5 µg/dL in a shipyard worker.
  • Workers were surveyed about symptoms and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Main Results:

  • Out of 357 workers, 65.0% had at least one BLL test.
  • Among tested workers, 171 (73.7%) had a maximum BLL (BLLmax) ≥5 µg/dL.
  • No significant difference in median BLLmax was observed between workers who received respirator training/fit testing and those who did not.

Conclusions:

  • The study highlights the critical need for effective provision and consistent use of PPE.
  • Implementing robust PPE strategies is essential to mitigate occupational lead exposure risks in shipyards.
