Auditory midbrain implants show asymmetrical cortical responses, with excitation spreading to higher frequencies. Current-focusing methods do not improve stimulation effectiveness, suggesting adjustments in electrode placement for better speech perception.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Auditory Neuroscience
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Auditory midbrain implants (AMIs) offer limited speech perception and frequency resolution.
- The role of spread of excitation and effectiveness of current-focusing in AMIs remain unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate cortical spread of excitation from electric midbrain stimulation.
- To evaluate the efficacy of current-focusing techniques (bipolar, tripolar) compared to monopolar stimulation.
Main Methods:
- Cortical population responses to electric midbrain stimulation were recorded in mice using multielectrode arrays.
- Monopolar, bipolar, and tripolar stimulation configurations were compared.
Main Results:
- Cortical responses showed asymmetrical spread, biased towards higher characteristic frequencies.
- No significant differences in stimulation thresholds, firing rates, or dynamic range were found between monopolar, bipolar, and tripolar stimulation.
Conclusions:
- Cortical responses to electric midbrain stimulation are tonotopically biased towards higher frequencies.
- Current-focusing is ineffective for direct contact electrical stimulation in the midbrain.
- Optimized electrode mapping for AMIs requires accounting for asymmetrical excitation spread by downward frequency band shifting and dorsal stimulation.
