Specialized multivitamins significantly reduce deficiencies in Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients. Supplement use improved levels of vitamin B12, vitamin D, folic acid, and ferritin, preventing new deficiencies long-term.
Area of Science:
- Bariatric Surgery Outcomes
- Nutritional Science
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Bariatric surgery, particularly Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, carries a risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
- Common deficiencies include Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, folate, and iron.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of a specialized multivitamin supplement in preventing nutrient deficiencies in Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients.
- To assess supplement effectiveness over the first three years post-surgery.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of a large, prospectively collected cohort of 1,160 Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients.
- Comparison between users (883) and non-users (258) of a specialized multivitamin supplement.
- Analysis of serum concentrations and incidence of deficiencies at 1, 2, and 3 years postoperatively.
Main Results:
- Multivitamin users exhibited higher serum concentrations of ferritin, vitamin B12, folic acid, and vitamin D after one year compared to non-users.
- Significantly fewer new deficiencies in ferritin, vitamin B12, and vitamin D were observed in supplement users.
- These positive effects on nutrient levels and deficiency prevention were sustained at the two and three-year marks.
Conclusions:
- Specialized multivitamin supplementation is effective in reducing deficiencies of vitamin B12, vitamin D, folic acid, and ferritin in Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients.
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients benefit from specialized multivitamin use.
- Advising specialized multivitamin supplements to this patient group is recommended.

Specialized Characteristics of Cardiac Muscles
Cardiac muscle cells are smaller than skeletal muscles, averaging 10–20 mm in diameter and 50–100 mm in length. However, they have large energy demands for continuous contraction and relaxation. This energy is almost exclusively derived from aerobic metabolism of energy...

Daycare centers
They provide several functions. Some facilities care for healthy newborns and children whose parents work, while others are medically focused and care for...
Special Features of Adaptive Immunity
The primary cell types involved in adaptive immunity are T cells and B cells. Each type has a unique role in defending the body against pathogens. T cells are responsible for cell-mediated immunity. They identify and eliminate infected cells directly,...
Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...
