    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Dentistry
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Bisphosphonates (BPs) are potent drugs used to treat metastatic bone disease.
    • Intravenous bisphosphonate infusions are common for managing skeletal-related events.

    Observation:

    • A 55-year-old female patient developed infection, suppuration, and sequestrum formation after mandibular extraction.
    • The patient had previously received eight intravenous infusions of a potent bisphosphonate.

    Findings:

    • Delayed dental care following bisphosphonate administration can lead to severe complications.
    • Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a significant risk.

    Implications:

    • Oncologists and dental practitioners must coordinate care for patients receiving bisphosphonates.
    • Prophylactic dental evaluation and intervention are crucial before invasive dental procedures in BP patients.
