Summary

Computerized transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) simulation significantly improves early learning of basic critical care echocardiography (CCE) skills. This simulation training also reduces the number of TTE examinations needed to achieve competency.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of computerized transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) simulation on the learning curve for achieving competency in basic CCE.
  • To compare the effectiveness of simulation-augmented training versus standard training in CCE.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, bicenter study involving 24 noncardiologist residents novice in ultrasound.
  • Participants were randomized into an interventional group (standard training plus computerized TTE simulation) and a control group (standard training only).
  • Skills were assessed at 1, 3, and 6 months using a validated scoring system; competency was defined as ≥90% score.

Main Results:

  • The interventional group showed significantly higher mean skills assessment scores at 1 and 3 months compared to the control group (P < 0.05).
  • No significant difference in scores was observed at 6 months, attributed to improved practical and technical skills in the simulation group.
  • Trainees in the interventional group required fewer supervised TTE examinations to reach competency (30 ± 9 vs. 36 ± 7; P = 0.0145).

Conclusions:

  • Adjunctive computerized simulation accelerates the learning curve for basic CCE.
  • Simulation training enhances practical and technical skills in echocardiography.
  • Computerized simulation reduces the number of TTE examinations required to achieve CCE competency.
