Functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI) reveals altered brain networks in epilepsy. This technique shows increased local connectivity and decreased connectivity between hemispheres in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.
Area of Science:
- Neuroimaging
- Epilepsy Research
- Brain Connectivity Analysis
Background:
- Functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI) analyzes brain activity during rest.
- fcMRI is effective in detecting network alterations in epilepsy.
- Presurgical evaluation of epilepsy benefits from advanced neuroimaging techniques.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate functional connectivity changes in unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy using fcMRI.
- To compare connectivity within and between diseased and healthy temporal lobes.
- To assess the utility of fcMRI in presurgical planning for epilepsy.
Main Methods:
- Presurgical fcMRI data from pediatric patients with unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy were analyzed.
- Seed-based analyses were performed on diseased and healthy temporal lobes.
- Connectivity within and between temporal lobe seeds was measured and compared.
Main Results:
- Local ipsilateral temporal lobe connectivity was significantly increased on the diseased side.
- Connectivity from the diseased to the healthy temporal lobe was significantly reduced.
- A significant regression was observed between local ipsilateral and inter-temporal lobe connectivity changes.
- Ipsilateral connectivity changes differed between patients with and without mesial temporal sclerosis.
Conclusions:
- fcMRI detects significant alterations in temporal lobe connectivity in unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy.
- fcMRI may aid in the presurgical evaluation of intractable temporal lobe epilepsy.
