Gastroparesis, a gastric motility disorder, causes delayed gastric emptying. This case study highlights a young female diagnosed with gastroparesis via gastric emptying scintigraphy after experiencing persistent vomiting and abdominal pain.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Nuclear Medicine
- Medical Diagnostics
Background:
- Gastroparesis is a functional gastric motility disorder characterized by delayed gastric emptying without anatomical obstruction.
- Key symptoms include early satiety, postprandial fullness, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal pain.
Observation:
- A young female presented with two months of persistent vomiting and abdominal pain.
- Initial investigations ruled out anatomical causes for her symptoms.
Findings:
- Gastric Emptying Scintigraphy revealed a delayed lag phase and prolonged half gastric emptying time.
- These findings were consistent with a diagnosis of gastroparesis.
Implications:
- Gastric Emptying Scintigraphy is a valuable tool for diagnosing functional gastric motility disorders like gastroparesis.
- Early diagnosis and management of gastroparesis can improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
