Fatigue01:21

Fatigue

856
Fatigue occurs when materials rupture under repeated or fluctuating loads, even at stress levels far below their static breaking strength. It typically results in brittle failure, even for ductile materials. It is a critical consideration in designing machines and structural components subjected to repetitive or varying loads. The nature of these loadings can range from fluctuating loads like unbalanced pump impellers causing vibrations to repeatedly bending a thin steel rod wire back and forth...

Instrument Calibration01:12

Instrument Calibration

771
Instrument calibration is essential for ensuring that instruments produce accurate and consistent results. It is vital in manufacturing, healthcare, testing laboratories, and scientific research. Calibration processes are specific to each instrument and help enhance data accuracy. Each instrument has a unique calibration process tailored to its design and function to improve data accuracy.

Instrumentation Amplifier

An electrocardiography (ECG) machine is an essential piece of medical equipment used to monitor the electrical activity of the heart. It operates by detecting small electrical changes on the skin that result from the depolarization of the heart muscle during each heartbeat. However, these signals are in the microvolt range and can be easily overwhelmed by noise or interference.
To overcome this challenge, an ECG machine utilizes an instrumentation amplifier. This specialized amplifier is...

Instrument Transformers01:23

Instrument Transformers

495
Instrument transformers, comprising voltage transformers (VTs) and current transformers (CTs), play crucial roles in power substations by providing isolated replicas of current or voltage for measurement and protection purposes. Voltage transformers reduce the primary voltage to levels suitable for relay operation and measurement, while current transformers scale down the primary current. The primary winding of a current transformer often consists of a single turn, achieved by threading the...

Uncertainty in Measurement: Reading Instruments

53.3K
Counting is the type of measurement that is free from uncertainty, provided the number of objects being counted does not change during the process. Such measurements result in exact numbers. By counting the eggs in a carton, for instance, one can determine exactly how many eggs are there in the carton. Similarly, the numbers of defined quantities are also exact. For example, 1 foot is exactly 12 inches, 1 inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, and 1 gram is exactly 0.001 kilograms. Quantities...

Muscle Recovery and Fatigue01:24

Muscle Recovery and Fatigue

4.2K
Muscle fatigue refers to the decline in a muscle's ability to maintain the force of contraction after prolonged activity. It primarily stems from changes within muscle fibers. Even before experiencing muscle fatigue, one may feel tired and have the urge to stop the activity. This response, known as central fatigue, occurs due to changes in the central nervous system, namely the brain and spinal cord. While there is no single mechanism that induces fatigue, it may serve as a protective...

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments are crucial in endodontic procedures.
  • Evaluating instrument performance and cyclic fatigue resistance is vital for clinical success.
  • Previous studies suggest ProTaper Next (PTN) exhibits good cyclic fatigue resistance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the in vitro performance of two NiTi rotary instruments: ProTaper Next (PTN) and Horizen (HZ).
  • To assess the cyclic fatigue resistance of new and used PTN and HZ instruments.
  • To evaluate instrument efficiency in reaching working length and deforming during root canal preparation.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-five ProTaper Next (PTN) X1 (17.04) and X2 (25.06) instruments and 25 Horizen (HZ) 20.04 and 25.06 instruments were used.
  • Instruments were divided into two groups: immediate cyclic fatigue testing (n=10) and simulated root canal preparation followed by fatigue testing (n=15).
  • Cyclic fatigue tests were conducted in artificial curved canals, recording time to fracture; data were statistically analyzed (CI = 95%).

Main Results:

  • Horizen (HZ) instruments reached working length faster and showed less deformation compared to ProTaper Next (PTN) instruments.
  • New instruments were significantly more resistant to cyclic fatigue than used instruments for both types.
  • HZ instruments demonstrated significantly higher resistance to cyclic fatigue than PTN instruments, irrespective of whether they were new or used.

Conclusions:

  • Horizen (HZ) instruments exhibit superior cyclic fatigue resistance and efficiency compared to ProTaper Next (PTN) instruments.
  • The performance of HZ instruments positions them among the most resistant NiTi rotary instruments available.
  • These findings have implications for selecting NiTi instruments for predictable endodontic outcomes.
