Pericardial tumor and pregnancy - a case report study

Background:

• Primary cardiac and pericardial tumors are exceptionally rare, occurring in 0.002-0.03% of cases.
• Benign tumors like myxoma and rhabdomyoma constitute the majority (70%) of primary heart tumors.
• Low incidence often results in diagnostic challenges, with patients frequently misdiagnosed with conditions like cardiomyopathy or mitral stenosis.

Observation:

• Pericardial and cardiac tumors can exert pressure on surrounding structures, leading to symptoms such as pericardial effusion, fibrinohemorrhagic pericarditis, and cardiac tamponade.
• The study presents a case of a female patient diagnosed with a pericardial cyst during the second trimester of pregnancy.
• The patient underwent multiple diagnostic procedures, leading to an accurate diagnosis.

Findings:

• A pericardial cyst was accurately diagnosed in a pregnant patient.
• Surgical treatment for the pericardial cyst was successfully performed.
• The pregnancy continued to term without adverse fetal outcomes.

Implications:

• Accurate and timely diagnosis of rare cardiac and pericardial tumors is crucial for effective management.
• Surgical intervention for pericardial cysts can be safely performed during pregnancy.
