Measurement: Derived Units03:02

Measurement: Derived Units

55.9K
The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units.

Measurement: Standard Units

81.3K
Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results.

Sound Intensity00:58

Sound Intensity

4.9K
The loudness of a sound source is related to how energetically the source is vibrating, consequently making the molecules of the propagation medium vibrate. To measure the loudness of a source, the physical quantity of interest is the intensity. This is defined as the energy emitted per unit of time per unit of area perpendicular to the sound wave's propagation direction. Since the total energy is greater if the source vibrates for a longer duration and over a larger area, dividing the...

The Neuromuscular Junction

The nervous system consists of complex motor neuron circuits, including upper motor neurons originating from the cerebral cortex and lower motor neurons starting in the spinal cord, coordinating both voluntary and involuntary movements. Among these, somatic motor neurons activate skeletal muscles and are classified into alpha, beta, and gamma types. Alpha neurons are vital for voluntary movement coordination, while gamma neurons adjust muscle spindle sensitivity, and the function of beta...

Units of Measurement

5.3K
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It deals with designing, analyzing, and manufacturing machines and mechanical systems. To ensure precise and accurate calculations, units of measurement are used. They provide a standard system for expressing and comparing physical quantities.
There are various well-known historical measurement systems, such as the Babylonian system, the Roman system, the Egyptian system, the Olympian system, the British system, and the Indus...

International System of Units01:29

International System of Units

5.1K
The International System of Units, known as the SI system, is a universally accepted measurement system recognized and used worldwide. The SI system is based on a set of three base units considered absolute, and their values do not change with location. These base units are meters, kilograms, and seconds.
Prefixes are used to define both larger and smaller quantities in the SI system. For example, milli, micro, and nano define smaller quantities, while kilo, mega, and giga are used to define...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Rehabilitation Science

Background:

  • Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICUAW), encompassing polyneuropathy and myopathy, affects critically ill patients.
  • Prolonged mechanical ventilation is a significant risk factor for developing ICUAW.
  • Understanding ICUAW's impact and effective treatments is crucial for patient recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of various rehabilitative treatments for patients diagnosed with ICUAW.
  • To explore the relationship between ICUAW and key clinical indicators.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines.
  • Searches were performed across major databases including Medline, Scielo, Web of Science, Cochrane, Cuiden, and Science Direct.
  • 10 selected studies involving 717 ICU patients were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant association was found between ICUAW and ventilator disconnection failure, mortality, extended ICU stays, and duration of mechanical ventilation.
  • Rehabilitation therapy demonstrated improvement in these indicators for patients with ICUAW.
  • Corticosteroid use did not show a correlation with neuromuscular alterations.

Conclusions:

  • ICUAW is significantly associated with adverse outcomes in ICU patients.
  • Rehabilitation therapy is an effective intervention for improving outcomes in ICUAW.
  • Further research may clarify the role of other interventions, while corticosteroids appear unrelated to neuromuscular changes in this context.
