    Summary

    A rare nerve disorder, mononeuritis multiplex, developed after severe meningococcal septicemia and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Vascular occlusions from DIC likely caused this serious neuropathy.

    Background:

    • Meningococcal septicemia is a severe bacterial infection that can lead to life-threatening complications.
    • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a condition where blood clots form throughout the small blood vessels of the body.
    • Neuropathy, damage to peripheral nerves, can be a complication of severe infections and coagulopathies.

    Observation:

    • A patient developed a mixed sensorimotor, predominantly axonal mononeuritis multiplex.
    • This neurological condition manifested after a severe case of meningococcal septicemia and DIC.
    • The patient also experienced distal limb necrosis.

    Findings:

    • The clinical presentation suggests a link between meningococcal septicemia, DIC, and the subsequent development of mononeuritis multiplex.
    • Ischemia, caused by DIC-induced multiple vascular occlusions, is proposed as the primary mechanism leading to the neuropathy.
    • Distal limb necrosis further supports the hypothesis of widespread vascular compromise.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights a potential neurological complication following severe meningococcal infections complicated by DIC.
    • Understanding the pathophysiology may guide future preventative or therapeutic strategies for similar cases.
    • Further research into the vascular mechanisms of neuropathy in sepsis and DIC is warranted.
