Summary

An in-house radiograph image interpretation program significantly improved accuracy and specificity in the additional training group (ATG) compared to the control group (CG) after one year. The ATG showed a marked improvement in skills development for preliminary clinical evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a hospital-developed, in-house image interpretation training program for radiographers.

Main Methods:

  • 48 radiographers were divided into a control group (CG) and an additional training group (ATG).
  • The ATG underwent in-house image interpretation training with ongoing peer support.
  • Both groups were assessed using RadBench® tests at baseline and one year later.

Main Results:

  • Initial accuracy was similar (70% vs. 71%), but the ATG showed higher sensitivity (83% vs. 72%).
  • After one year, the ATG's accuracy significantly improved to 86% (vs. 70% for CG), driven by increased specificity (87% vs. 56%).
  • 43% of the ATG achieved exceptional performance standards, compared to none in the CG.

Conclusions:

  • In-house training programs are a cost-effective method for radiographer skills development.
  • These programs are suitable for preceptorship and new employee orientation to monitor image interpretation performance.
