Adding email boosters to computer-delivered interventions significantly reduced drinking among legal-age college students. This strategy shows promise for extending intervention effects and minimizing harmful drinking in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the utility of emailed boosters to enhance and extend reductions in drinking among emerging adult college drinkers.
  • To explore age and sex as potential moderators of intervention effects.

Main Methods:

  • 537 college students (aged 18-24) were randomized into CDI-only, CDI + booster email, or control groups.
  • Participants were assessed up to 9 months post-intervention.
  • Booster emails with personalized feedback were sent 2 weeks after CDI completion.

Main Results:

  • The booster enhanced intervention effects for legal-drinking-age students but not for underage drinkers.
  • Booster effects were not significantly moderated by sex.
  • While a trend was observed, the overall booster effect did not reach statistical significance.

Conclusions:

  • A brief CDI combined with an email booster significantly reduced drinking for legal-age emerging adults.
  • Further development of booster strategies is a promising direction for reducing college student drinking.
  • This study contributes to understanding how to augment digital interventions for college drinkers.
