Association between low bone mass and the serum RANKL and OPG in patients with nephrolithiasis

High serum osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels are linked to lower bone mineral density (BMD) in kidney stone patients. This finding suggests OPG may indicate femoral neck BMD in individuals with nephrolithiasis.

- Serum OPG and RANKL levels were quantified via ELISA.

- Median serum OPG levels were significantly higher in nephrolithiasis patients with low bone mass compared to those with normal BMD (3.9 pmol/l vs. 3.1 pmol/l, P=0.03).
- A negative correlation was observed between femoral neck bone density and serum OPG in nephrolithiasis patients (r=-0.0344, P=0.02).
Conclusions:
- Elevated serum OPG levels may serve as an indicator of femoral neck bone mineral density in patients suffering from nephrolithiasis.
