Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development01:19

Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development

1.0K
Kohlberg's theory of moral development uses the Heinz dilemma — a thought experiment in which a man, Heinz, must decide whether to steal an unaffordable drug to save his dying wife — to illustrate the evolution of moral reasoning. This framework, divided into three levels with two stages, highlights how individuals' understanding of right and wrong becomes increasingly complex.

At the pre-conventional level, morality is primarily driven by personal...

Empathy02:34

Empathy

10.1K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Milgram's Obedience to Authority02:20

Milgram's Obedience to Authority

7.4K
Obedience to authority is classically demonstrated in a more famous series of social psychology experiments performed by Stanley Milgram. He was a social psychology professor at Yale who was influenced by the trial of Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi war criminal. Eichmann’s defense for the atrocities he committed was that he was “just following orders.”

Group Design02:01

Group Design

10.6K
The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between...

The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

7.1K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Biodiversity and Human Values01:24

Biodiversity and Human Values

17.1K
Human civilization relies on biodiversity in many ways. Sudden changes in species biodiversity result in environmental changes that can modify weather patterns and therefore human civilizations.

Summary

Proximity to victims or authority figures influences moral decision-making. Physical closeness to victims leads to more utilitarian choices and slower processing in moral judgments.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Moral Psychology

Background:

  • Moral decisions involving harm or punishment are complex.
  • Guilt is a key emotion in moral judgments, with two types identified: empathic and deontological.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate decision-making in moral and nonmoral dilemmas.
  • Assess the influence of proximity to victims and authority figures on moral judgments.

Main Methods:

  • Compared four conditions: Empathic Moral (near victim), Deontological Moral (near authority), Standard Moral (no influence), and Nonmoral dilemmas.
  • Utilized validated experimental stories for dilemma presentation.

Main Results:

  • More utilitarian responses observed in the Empathic Moral condition compared to Deontological Moral and Nonmoral conditions.
  • Individuals took longer to read dilemmas under empathic guilt, regardless of response type.
  • No significant differences in response time were found.

Conclusions:

  • Physical proximity to victims and presence of authority differentially impact moral judgment.
  • These factors induce slower decision-making and more utilitarian outcomes, especially with physical proximity.
