Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) does not affect menstruation before disease onset. However, women with NMOSD experience increased menstrual irregularities after diagnosis, suggesting a potential link to the disorder.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Immunology
- Women's Health
Background:
- Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) predominantly affects women.
- The relationship between NMOSD and menstrual cycle characteristics is not well understood.
- This study investigates menstrual patterns in NMOSD patients compared to healthy controls.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare menstrual cycle patterns and symptoms in women with NMOSD and healthy controls.
- To identify any changes in menstruation following the onset of NMOSD.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 32 female NMOSD patients and 33 healthy controls in Iran (2015-2016).
- Data collected included age at menarche, menstrual characteristics, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and perimenstrual symptoms.
- NMOSD patients reported menstrual cycle changes after disease onset.
Main Results:
- No significant demographic differences or variations in age at menarche between NMOSD patients and controls.
- Healthy controls reported premenstrual syndrome (PMS) more frequently than NMOSD patients (78.8% vs. 40.6%).
- 43.8% of NMOSD patients reported menstrual changes post-onset, with a significant increase in menstrual irregularities (15.6% to 43.7%).
Conclusions:
- Menstrual cycles do not differ between NMOSD patients and controls before disease onset.
- NMOSD onset is associated with increased menstrual irregularities.
- These findings suggest NMOSD may impact menstruation, potentially requiring further intervention for affected women.
