This study introduces NDN-DISCA, a Named Data Networking (NDN) based Internet of Things (IoT) disaster management system (DMS). NDN-DISCA improves emergency response by minimizing delay and enhancing throughput for IoT disaster scenarios.
Area of Science:
- Computer Science
- Networking
- Internet of Things (IoT)
Background:
- Disasters pose significant threats to infrastructure and human life.
- Existing IP-based IoT systems face challenges in disaster management.
- Named Data Networking (NDN) offers a promising alternative architecture for IoT applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose and evaluate a novel NDN-based architecture for IoT disaster management systems (DMS).
- To specifically address fire disaster scenarios within an IoT smart campus environment.
- To leverage NDN's capabilities for efficient emergency content dissemination.
Main Methods:
- Development of the NDN-DISCA architecture, utilizing NDN's producer-push model.
- Implementation of Beacon Alert Messages (BAM) with fixed sequence numbers for push support.
- Simulation of NDN-DISCA within the ndnSIM framework for an IoT-based smart campus fire disaster scenario.
Main Results:
- NDN-DISCA demonstrated minimal delay in emergency content delivery.
- The proposed architecture achieved improved throughput compared to legacy NDN and existing push schemes.
- Simulation results validated the effectiveness of NDN-DISCA in a simulated disaster environment.
Conclusions:
- NDN-DISCA offers a viable and efficient solution for IoT-based disaster management.
- The NDN architecture, through NDN-DISCA, enhances emergency response capabilities.
- The findings suggest NDN is well-suited for critical IoT applications like disaster management.
