Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine02:50

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine

6.2K
Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment.
The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...

Pilot and Numeric Relaying01:21

Pilot and Numeric Relaying

492
Pilot relaying is a type of differential protection used in power systems. It compares electrical quantities at the terminals of equipment via a communication channel instead of direct relay interconnection. This method is essential for transmission lines where the terminals are far apart, typically up to 80 km for lines with 69 to 115 kV ratings. Four types of communication channels are used for pilot relaying:

Emerging Adulthood

700
Jeffrey Arnett's concept of emerging adulthood offers a framework to understand the unique developmental stage between adolescence and full-fledged adulthood, generally from ages 18 to 25. This period is marked by extensive exploration and shifts in identity, relationships, and career choices, a process known in psychology as role experimentation. Emerging adulthood reflects the evolving cultural expectations surrounding adulthood and the dynamic process of personal transformation during...

Introduction Cardiac Emergencies

374
Cardiac emergencies are critical situations involving the heart that require immediate medical intervention to prevent severe complications or death. These emergencies often arise from underlying heart conditions that impair the heart's ability to function correctly.Types of Cardiac EmergenciesThe most common types of cardiac emergencies include Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), myocardial infarction (MI), cardiac arrest, and heart failure.Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)...

Microorganisms in Medicine and Therapeutics

1.1K
Microorganisms play a fundamental role in vaccine development, gene therapy, and therapeutic production. Their biological properties are harnessed to advance medicine and public health. Beyond immunization, microorganisms contribute to gut health, antibiotic synthesis, and genetic disease treatment.Live Attenuated and Inactivated VaccinesLive attenuated vaccines, such as the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, utilize weakened forms of pathogens to closely resemble natural infections.

Personal Identity01:25

Personal Identity

413
Personal identity is the deeply felt sense of self that individuals cultivate over time, intricately woven from intrinsic qualities they consider essential to their existence—qualities such as morality, intelligence, and friendliness. These attributes serve as vital internal benchmarks, guiding individuals in evaluating whether their actions resonate with their true selves. When personal identity takes center stage in one's life, individuals often emphasize their distinctiveness,...

Summary

Emergency medicine residents exhibit distinct personality traits compared to other physicians, with notable variations across different training programs. These findings may influence specialty selection and resident training strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Psychology
  • Emergency Medicine

Background:

  • Understanding the psychological profiles of medical residents is crucial for optimizing training and selection.
  • Emergency Medicine (EM) is a demanding specialty requiring specific personality attributes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the personality characteristics of EM residents.
  • To compare these characteristics with the general physician population.
  • To assess personality consistency and variation across different EM residency programs.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 140 EM residents from five U.S. programs.
  • Utilized three Hogan assessments: HPI (usual tendencies), HDS (stress tendencies), and MVPI (motivators).
  • Compared resident data to normative physician data using t-tests and analyzed program differences with ANOVA.

Main Results:

  • EM residents showed lower scores in adjustment, ambition, and learning approach (HPI) compared to norms.
  • Residents scored higher in cautiousness and excitability, but lower in boldness and imagination (HDS).
  • Higher scores in altruism and aesthetics, but lower in security and tradition (MVPI) were observed. Significant, though moderate, variations existed between programs.

Conclusions:

  • EM residents possess a unique personality profile distinct from the general physician population.
  • Personality differences may influence medical students' specialty choices.
  • While generally consistent, moderate personality variations exist among EM residents across different programs, informing selection and training.
