Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum endocan levels in kidney transplant recipients.
  • To correlate endocan with markers of endothelial damage, inflammation, and kidney function.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 63 kidney transplant recipients and 22 healthy volunteers.
  • Measured serum endocan, vWF, ICAM, VCAM, hsCRP, IL-6, and cystatin C using commercial assays.

Main Results:

  • Kidney transplant recipients showed significantly higher levels of endocan and other endothelial/inflammatory markers compared to controls.
  • Endocan levels correlated with renal function (creatinine, eGFR), time post-transplant, liver enzymes, and endothelial markers (ICAM, VCAM).
  • Multifactorial analysis identified creatinine, ICAM, and VCAM as predictors of endocan levels.

Conclusions:

  • Endocan concentration in kidney transplant recipients is associated with endothelial damage.
  • Endocan levels appear dependent on graft function and time elapsed since transplantation.
