Thoracoscopic segmentectomy (TS-S) is a viable option for small lung cancers, showing excellent survival rates. Careful patient selection is key for successful outcomes in this minimally invasive lung cancer surgery.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively investigate the outcomes of thoracoscopic segmentectomy (TS-S) for small-sized peripheral lung cancer.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of TS-S in a clinical setting.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 191 patients who underwent TS-S from April 2008 to December 2016.
  • Inclusion criteria: peripheral, noninvasive lung cancer (<2 cm, C/T ratio <0.5) or invasive lung cancer with sufficient surgical margin.
  • Data collected included operative time, blood loss, complications, and survival rates.

Main Results:

  • The 5-year overall survival and relapse-free survival rates were 93.4% and 90.8%, respectively.
  • Low conversion rate (0.5%) to open thoracotomy and minimal 30-day mortality.
