Gene Families01:57

Gene Families

10.0K
Gene families consist of groups of genes proposed to have originated from a common ancestor. Typically these arise through events in which a gene or genes are mistakenly duplicated during cell division. Unlike their parent genes (which are subject to selection pressure to maintain function), these gene copies do not need to preserve their sequences and may evolve at a relatively faster rate.
Occasionally these regions can be adapted to take on new roles within the organism, becoming novel genes...

Frequency-dependent Selection01:21

Frequency-dependent Selection

24.1K
When the fitness of a trait is influenced by how common it is (i.e., its frequency) relative to different traits within a population, this is referred to as frequency-dependent selection. Frequency-dependent selection may occur between species or within a single species. This type of selection can either be positive—with more common phenotypes having higher fitness—or negative, with rarer phenotypes conferring increased fitness.

Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

46.2K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Trait and State Self-Esteem

11.5K
The term self-esteem is often used generically, to refer to how people feel about themselves. However, according to research, there are three distinct constructs that should not be used interchangeably (Brown & Marshall, 2006).

Measures of Central Tendency02:16

Measures of Central Tendency

21.3K
The "center" of a data set is also a way of describing location. The two most widely used measures of the "center" of the data are the mean (average) and the median. The words "mean" and "average" are often used interchangeably. The substitution of one word for the other is common practice. The technical term is "arithmetic mean" and "average" is technically a center location. However, in practice among non-statisticians,...

Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

36.4K
In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational health
  • Ergonomics
  • Public health

Background:

  • Musculoskeletal problems are a significant health concern.
  • Prolonged computer and internet use is widespread among office workers and students.
  • Understanding the prevalence of these issues is crucial for preventative measures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of musculoskeletal problems in individuals who frequently use computers and the internet.
  • To identify common symptoms and affected anatomical sites.
  • To explore the association between computer/internet usage duration and musculoskeletal issues.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted.
  • Participants included office workers and students aged 18-50 years, using computers/internet for ≥3 hours daily.
  • Exclusion criteria: pre-diagnosed musculoskeletal conditions. Data collected via questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • Out of 150 participants, 44.7% reported musculoskeletal problems.
  • Headache (46%) and neck pain (41.3%) were the most common symptoms.
  • Wrist pain was least common (16%). A significant association (p<0.05) was found between computer use duration and musculoskeletal problems.

Conclusions:

  • Musculoskeletal symptoms, particularly headache and back pain, are prevalent among frequent computer and internet users.
  • These symptoms are associated with prolonged usage and are often underreported.
  • Findings underscore the need for awareness and potential interventions for computer users.
