Background:

  • Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious gastrointestinal condition in neonates.
  • Congenital heart defects (CHD) may influence the presentation and outcomes of NEC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the characteristics and outcomes of NEC in infants with CHD (cardiogenic NEC) versus those without (classical NEC).

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Web of Science.
  • A meta-analysis compared NEC incidence and mortality in infants with and without CHD.

Main Results:

  • NEC incidence was higher in infants with CHD (5.1%) compared to those without (0.8%).
  • Mortality was significantly higher in infants with CHD and NEC (38%) versus those without (27%).
